The Northern Way was a unique initiative, bringing together partners across North of England to work together to improve the economic performance of the North, and re-balance the UKin economic terms. The Northern Wayrecognised the importance and value of a distinctive energy offer at the level of the North, both as a potential new source of economic growth and jobs, and as a strategic response to the global challenge of climate change. The NWDA provided the leading RDA role for the Energy Theme, hosted the theme leader and provided administration support. Delivery relied on the Theme Leader working closely with the three Northern RDA Leads, and with designated partners from the Innovation in Industry Steering Group. The Northern Wayhad a clear and deliverable ambition for the North of England to become the low carbon powerhouse for the UK.
TheNorthern Waypublished the Strategic Direction for Energy in September 2010 which aimed to build upon the successes and strengths of the North of England; it is focused on areas where a greater competitive advantage could be gained by investing on a collaborative basis. TheNorthern Waydelivered projects and research which highlighted the areas where the power of three northern RDAs created critical mass:
- Carbon Abatement Technology Programme
- Northern Wind Innovation Programme
- Northern Way Nuclear Supply Chain Development
- Understanding theOpportunityin the Offshore Wind Sector
