Leadership for sustainable development within any organisation needs to be driven from the top. The NWDA Board therefore formed a sub committee of the main Board to specifically address the region’s environmental economy. Chaired, originally by Joe Dwek and subsequently Clive Elphick and Peter Allen, the Board Energy and Environment Sub Committee included external representatives from business, public and third sector partners. The Sub Committee oversaw the NWDA’s programmes on energy and environment and challenged the officers to provide leadership within the region, utilising a strong partnership approach for both strategy development and programme delivery.
The Sub Committee also had responsibility for improving the Agency’s own environmental performance. With sustainability issues high on the regional agenda, the NWDA needed to ensure that corporately it was delivering best practice in relation to the management of its own estate and internal systems and processes. In 2006, ISO14001 certification was achieved for the NWDA’s Head Office and management of the Single Programme processes. Subsequent external audits ensured the Agency maintained its certification and continually improved its corporate and operating systems for three years prior to its closure.
