Project Northwest Biomass Programme
Partner Envirolink Northwest
Lifetime 2008 – 2011
Funding NWDA £1.2m
The project focused upon large scale industrial process heat (>0.4MW) using reprocessed and waste materials providing support and advice for consumers converting from fossil fuels.  The project also supported the production of a technical material, supplier directory, workshops events etc.Examples of projects supported:

  • SCA Hygiene Products UK Ltd: Design works for a 20MW biomass boiler.
  • James Cropper plc: Design works for a SRF/ Paper sludge boiler
  • HeinekenUK: support with launch event and fuel procurement.
  • Colour Gro: Design works for a biomass boiler to supplement oil heating.
  • First Milk: Design works for a biomass boiler
  • BSW Timber plc: Design works for biomass CHP
Outputs 634   jobs created / safeguarded and 100 businesses assisted
Lessons learned The project manager was expert in the field and his credibility was vital to company engagement (and achieving outputs).  A very targeted approach to support was taken concentrating on energy intensive process heat users, offerring each of these prospects detailed advice. The project also worked closely with a number of other partners such as the Carbon Trust, local wood reprocesseors and community forest organisations.  Consequently, the project frequently brokered in other public support mechanisms.
Future outlook The Biomass Project Manager returned to theMerseyForest, and is continuing support to the biomass sector in this role.
